In the silence of the early morning, the rhythmic beat of a hammer can be heard. It is then joined by the shrill cry of a saw cutting wood and the rough scraping of a trowel plastering a wall. These are the sounds of tools, in the hands that rehabilitate the city.
Slowly, the hands return everything to its right place.
The tiles realign on the roof, the corrugated sheet metal reinforcement once again protects the gable, and the flashing finishes it off with the perfection of a metal sheath. The iron railing rests again on the stone floor of the balcony, its filigree design ornamenting the facade. The skylight crowns the staircase once more, its stained glass painting the interior walls with colorful light.
Stone by stone, beam by beam, tile by tile, the hands are remaking the city – a giant work of inhabited craftsmanship.
